Connecting Fast-slow Systems and Conley Index Theory via Transversality

چکیده
Geometric Singular Perturbation Theory (GSPT) and Conley Index Theory are two powerful techniques to analyze dynamical systems. Conley already realized that using his index is easier for singular perturbation problems. In this paper, we will revisit Conley’s results and prove that the GSPT technique of Fenichel Normal Form can be used to simplify the application of Conley index techniques even further. We also hope that our results provide a better bridge between the different fields. Furthermore we show how to interpret Conley’s conditions in terms of averaging. The result are illustrated by the two-dimensional van der Pol equation and by a three-dimensional MorrisLecar model.

متن کاملRigorous Computations of Homoclinic Tangencies
In this paper, we propose a rigorous computational method for detecting homoclinic tangencies and structurally unstable connecting orbits. It is a combination of several tools and algorithms, including the interval arithmetic, the subdivision algorithm, the Conley index theory, and the computational homology theory. As an example we prove the existence of generic homoclinic tangencies in the Hé...

We study the classical action functional SV on the free loop space of a closed, finite dimensional Riemannian manifold M and the symplectic action AV on the free loop space of its cotangent bundle. The critical points of both functionals can be identified with the set of perturbed closed geodesics in M . The potential V ∈ C∞(M × S,R) serves as perturbation and we show that both functionals are ...
متن کاملA Rigorous Numerical Method for the Global Analysis of Infinite-Dimensional Discrete Dynamical Systems
We present a numerical method to prove certain statements about the global dynamics of infinite dimensional maps. The method combines set-oriented numerical tools for the computation of invariant sets and isolating neighborhoods, the Conley index theory and analytic considerations. It not only allows for the detection of a certain dynamical behaviour, but also for a precise computation of the c...
